[:hr]In cooperation with the Government Office for Human Rights and the Rights of National Minorities the Office of the Ombudswoman conducted a series of training sessions for the prison system employees on combatting discrimination and the prevention of degrading treatment.
As part of the training sessions Deputy Ombudsman Mario Krešić gave talks on the prohibition of degrading treatment as a human right and the role of the National Preventive Mechanism in its prevention and introduced the participants to the content of the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. Advisor to the Ombudswoman Silvija Trgovec Greif acquainted the participants with the provisions of the Anti-Discrimination Act. Following the theoretical part of the sessions, the participants were provided with the opportunity to test the acquired knowledge by working on concrete examples deriving from the case law of the European Court of Human Rights and the national courts.
The training sessions were carried out on three occasions in the period between November 2015 and April 2016, with over 60 employees of more than 20 penal institutions participating and are just one in a series of educational activities organized by or with the participation of the Office of the Ombudswoman as part of its continuing and growing efforts in promoting human rights and combatting discrimination. The activities and efforts in question are targeted both at the general population as well as at the particular groups of individuals who implement the human rights and anti-discrimination legislation as part of their everyday work.[:]
